March 1 2008Houston's only monthly outdoor art festival showcases artists from all over city and state, prepares for four year anniversary March 1 ''' Houston Heights, February 19, 2008 -''' Month after month for the past four years, artists have gathered on an empty parking and transformed it into the Yale Street Arts Market, a small scale arts festival. Originally located on the lot of Kaplans Ben-Hur department store, since closed, the artists have moved to 19th Street, at Wind Water Gallery Asian Antiques. Though the scale is smaller, the arts market has grown in popularity among artists and patrons. March 1 will be a double anniversary, two years on 19th Street and four years in business. That first art market featured mostly local, Heights area artists, now fine artists from all over the greater Houston area, Austin and Brenham clamor for the 38 spaces. Four rows of white canopied tents display paintings in all mediums and sizes, photography, sculpture and jewelry. Sticking to the original mission to provide a regular outlet to showcase art to the public ina non-jurored atmosphere has assured the Yale Street Arts Market success. The entertainment lineup includes Duke Jones' Rocket City Jukes at noon, Carrie Ann & The Apocalyptics at 3 p.m. and Fahl & Folk at 5 p.m. Jones, performed at the first arts market and has continued as host to nearly every performer since. Carrie Ann Buchanan's band The Apocalyptics just release their first professional CD titled "Strong Wind" to rave reviews by local music critics. The Yale Street Arts Market is open on the first Saturday of every month year round. Daytime hours from October thru May and evenings June thru September.
