Howdy!
While talking with artists over the last few months we all agreed that an evening show, on July 4th would not work. Lets go see some fireworks!
Not to worry, we'll be back August 1, from 6 to 10pm for White Linen Night in the Heights at TWO locations! That's right I said two locations. So many artists want to come back for White Linen Night in the Heights that we needed more room.
Sterling Bank at 414 W. 19th St. will provide the additional space. You'll find many of your favorite artists and plenty of new ones. An entertainment stage will be at both locations.
Travel between the markets on dedicated pedi-cabs!
Extras!
Now I know some of you may be in near panic mode about no market Saturday. I am too. So here are a few things the market artists are doing in the month of July that I plan to attend as well as some extras. I've been compiling a list of events and places that you don't hear about in the mainstream, send me yours! Brief explanation and a link to more details:
Heights 1st Saturday! Many of the shops and restaurants will be open this Saturday. Check out all the details on the website.
Art Openings
July 11 (Saturday)
3rd Annual Frida Festival At the East End Urban Market, I believe the name says it all ... "Come celebrate the life and legacy of one of Latin America's most important artists, Frida Kahlo." The artists' work I've seen that are attending this event is phenomenal. And come on, a Frida look alike contest! Day activities are free, evening gala is $20. Check the website.
July 18 (Saturday)
Arte Caliente Curated by our own Martin L. de Vore. This will be an awesome event that no one should miss. Martin has been talking about doing this show for years, and now he's teamed up with Lori Betz. Whoa watch out! Plan to attend this one.
July 23 (Thursday)
PerezCohen Gallery Art Opening!
That's right, Margot and I have the gallery on the move to the Hyde
Park neighborhood. Check the website for details next week. What? You didn't know that Margot Perez and I opened an art gallery? Then you must attend this show!
Did you know about ...
The East End Urban Market Some of the artists and vendors from 1st Saturday have been attending this weekly mercado and talking it up. Now open 4-9pm Saturdays.
But check the website, they are known to have the occasional Friday night Fiesta. I popped in last Friday night and was treated to Sister Sister y Los Misters! Some delectable treats and a couple of frozen margaritas. Sweet!
"... a funky, eclectic warehouse offering a perfect venue for
exhibitors and shoppers. Located in the Tlaquepaque Market along
with Bohemeo's (music, art & coffee) and Kanomwan (also known as
Telephone Thai) & the Houston Institute for Culture." 716 Telephone Rd.
Thursday Night Movie at Domy Books Like movies? You're gonna love this. Buy a bottle of wine and order a pizza from Brazil next door, then kick back on the patio behind Domy Books. The guys behind Film Monitor, give a brief explanation of the film and start about 8:30.
Tuesdays: Biscuit Jazz Jam 8-11 pm! This has to be Houston's best kept secrets, I am totally amazed at the talent that shows up at this event. If you're out late, stop in anyway the best musicians show up after 10. Hosted by Danielle Reich, who performs on Wednesday nights. More ...
Jam night is high-energy, with a great array of
musicians (saxes, trumpets, vocalists, flugelhorns, flutes, guitarists,
bassists, drummers, and even the occasional harmonica or melodica)
sitting in every week
King Biscuit Patio Cafe (www.thekingbiscuit.com) 1606 White Oak Dr., Houston, 77009
Have a fabulous & safe 4th and I'll keep an eye out for you at these events! Tell your friends! And for sure we'll see you August 1 for White Linen Night In The Heights!
Shoutout to Market Kim! Kim runs the Saturday Market in Eugene, Oregon and I've stolen her title. ;D
